Rabbi Nathan Barkan street in Riga



Street named after Chief Rabbi of Riga and Latvia Nathan Barkan (1923-2003) was opened in Riga on July 02, 2010. Rabbi Nathan Barkan was an outstanding person in the history of Latvia. He was born in small town Livani, got religious education. He survived the Holocaust and was a passionate chasid all over 20 tears of post-war life in Soviet Latvia. In 1969 he immigrated to Israel, and in 1989 returned to Latvia as a shaliah of Lubavitch Rebe Rabbi Menachem Mendel Shneersohn. He was not only a teacher and Rabbi, but also a wise advisor for both Jewish and non-Jewish people of Latvia.
