“Children of Latvia draw and Write against Holocaust and Discrimination”

Results for the contest “Children of Latvia draw and Write against Holocaust and Discrimination”

The competition “Children of Latvia Draw and Write against Holocaust and Children of Latvia Draw Discrimination” was organized to continue the previous competition “Children of Latvia draw ancient synagogues” and to motivate teenagers to find out more about Jewish history in Latvia. The aim of the competition is tolerance and integration of Latvian society by creating an understanding about multicultural society. We hope that this project helped in development of democracy in European Latvia.

We received more than 200 creative works – also from evening schools, schools of prison and schools for children with special needs; 27 schools participated in the project. Works are different by their nature: poems, writings, pictures, video, photo albums, diaries, newspapers.

Together with children works the unique exhibition of Latvian First Republic synagogues is organized and is held in the same exhibition hall.

The exhibition was opened by the President of Latvia Valdis Zatlers. More than 200 people had participated in the event, including the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Latvia Artis Pabriks, the ambassadors of European and other countries and also representatives of Latvian establishment. Most of visitors were interested to see the opinion and the attitude of children and teenagers to the horrible pages of the Latvian history.

In his speech the President had emphasized the importance of educating children and telling them about different cultures since their childhood. Other speakers had developed the thesis about the importance of children in the trespassing the culture and norms and also in breaking boarders and stereotypes.

The head of the religious community “Shamir” Rabbi Menachem Barkahan had presented the President a silver menorah, to lighten the Castle of President. After the ceremony the congregation had followed the Rabbi and the President in their tour around the exhibition. Rabbi Menachem Barkahan was explaining every art work in details to the President and the ministers.
