International conference “Holocaust museums and memorial places in post-communist countries – challenges and opportunities”

 International conference "Holocaust museums and memorial places in post-communist countries challenges and opportunities" takes place on June 04-05, 2012 in Riga. The conference emphasizes importance of the Holocaust remembrance in small European countries with overlapping memories. It will also focus on hidden resources for Holocaust remembrance and research in these countries, on the peculiarities of the Holocaust education and unknown pages of Resistance movement and heroism in ghettos and concentration camps. Session on informal Jewish education as a part of museums’ activities held by Melamedia International center is also included to the program.  (More)

Kaufmann, Max. Churbn Lettland

Born in Daugavpils, Max Kaufmann (1897-1987) was a businessman who lived in Riga and was incarcerated by the Nazis with his wife and teenage son in the Riga ghetto. After the murder of his wife and son, Mr. Kaufmann was transported to the Kaiserwald concentration camp and subsequently, with other prisoners, to the Buchenwald concentration camp in Germany. Following this ordeal he was forced to join the "death march" to the Sachsenhausen concentration camp where he was liberated on May 1, 1945.  (More)
Mark Marjanovski concert

Mark Marjanovski memorial concert took place in Riga on May 10, 2012. Mark Marjanovski’s tangos are forgotten and he himself perished in Buchenwald in 1944. This concert is an another attempt to save Latvian Jewish heritage. Jewish Calendar 5772

Jewish society and association “Shamir” issued new calendar for 5772 devoted to the variety of Jewish cuisine. Besides recipes you will there letters of Hebrew alphabet by Hamburg artist Roman Feierstein, a number of words in Hebrew and first pages of books by Latvian Rabbis. The calendar is issued in English, Latvian and Russian. A personal appeal from Shamir CEO Rabbi Menachem Barkahan

Jewish Association “Shamir” Latvia passed through year 2011 successfully. About 5000 people visited Riga Ghetto museum. More than 2000 attended events of Jewish Culture Festival. Football game was dedicated to the memory of killed in the Holocaust. About 3000 pages of Encyclopedia “Jews of Latvia in World War II” are ready to be published. In July we had March for Life and in September we read names of killed Jewish children in the Riga park. We organize international conferences in Riga and Purim celebration in tiny Jewish community of Rezekne. We publish Jewish calendars and postmarks. We support Jewish exhibitions in small towns of Latvia and tell Latvian students about intellectual Resistance in Terezin camp.  (More)
First year of Riga Ghetto museum

On September 21, 2011 we celebrate first birthday of Riga Ghetto and Latvian Holocaust museum. About 4 000 visitors attended the museum this year. Amongst them were President of Latvia Andris Berzinsh, minister of culture Sarmite Elerte, Riga mayor Nil Ushakov and vice-mayor Andris Ameriks, Special Envoy for Holocaust Issues Douglas Davidson, participants of the music competition “New wave”, ambassadors, businessmen and politicians. The part of Latvian Jewish encyclopedia “Jews of Latvia in the WWII” was issued in 5 volumes. Jewish liturgical music concert

Concert of liturgical music, dedicated to New Jewish year took place on September 14, 2011 at 19:00 in the Great Hall of Riga Latvian Society house (Merķeļa Str. 13). Participating cantor Baruch Finkelstein and the male group of choir “Balsis”, conductor Ints Teterovskis, accompanied by Jevgeny Hazdan, piano. Jewish liturgical and folk music was performed. (More)
The concert of Nechama Lifshitsayte songs

The concert “Mir singen Yiddish” took place on September 18 at 18:00 in the White Hall of Riga Latvian Society house (Merķeļa Street 13) and on September 20 at 18:00 in Daugavpils music college (Kandavas Street 2a). Followers of Nechama Lifshitsayte, famous singer and fighter for Jews rights in Soviet Union, from Israel performed folk and author songs in Yiddish, as well as Ghetto and Jewish Resistance songs. Participating Gali Davidov, Rose Klein, Irina Kopitova, Regina Dricker, piano, and Martha Smith (Norway). Traditionally Riga concert is only for women. (More)

Exhibition of three Hamburg and Moscow artists Roman Feierstein, Lubov Simonenko and Anna Simonenko is to be opened on September 12, 2011 at 16:00 in Latvian State History archive.
