Steps for Life
On July 04, 2010, the Holocaust Memorial day in Latvia more than 500 people participated in the memorial march "Steps for Life". The event was organised by religious community "Shamir" in co-operation with World congress of Russian Jewry and Jewish community Council of Europe. Members of Jewish communities of Latvia, diplomats, delegations from Germany, Israel and USA, "Maccabi" members and Riga inhabitants participated in the event. They walked from Old Jewish cemetery through Riga ghetto area to the Big Choral Synagogue memorial and burnt candles there in memory of killed Jews. (More)

Rabbi Nathan Barkan street in Riga
Street named after Chief Rabbi of Riga and Latvia Nathan Barkan (1923-2003) was opened in Riga on July 02, 2010. Rabbi Nathan Barkan was an outstanding person in the history of Latvia. He was born in small town Livani, got religious education. He survived the Holocaust and was a passionate chasid all over 20 tears of post-war life in Soviet Latvia. In 1969 he immigrated to Israel, and in 1989 returned to Latvia as a shaliah of Lubavitch Rebe Rabbi Menachem Mendel Shneersohn. He was not only a teacher and Rabbi, but also a wise advisor for both Jewish and non-Jewish people of Latvia. (More)„Teiglah, kreplah, aingemahts. Jewish cuisine”
The most beautiful and tasty book by association “Shamir” was published in November 2009. It is „Teiglah, kreplah, aingemahts. Jewish cuisine”. There are chapters, devoted to Jewish tradition and kashrut, as well as a lot of recipes, gathered from elderly Jewish ladies, living in Riga. There are also recipes of Yemen and South Jews, who are living in Latvia now. (More)Memorial groves in the Hills of Jerusalem
Religious community and association “Shamir” has purchased two groves in the Martyrs Forest in the Hills of Jerusalem in memory of all Latvian children who perished during the World War II in Latvia and all the Jews who perished in Latvia in the Holocaust. (More)
